North America's Leading Elevator Consultant Launches The First Smart Elevator in Ontario

Solucore Inc., a leading North American elevator consultant, has introduced ground-breaking elevator technology which enables people to get to where they want to go faster and reduces energy consumption.

Toronto, Ontario – October 17, 2011 – Things are looking up in the elevator industry. Toronto-based Solucore Inc., a leading North American elevator consultant, today announced the first Ontario installation of a smart elevator in the downtown Toronto core.

The smart technology, called destination dispatch, is an automated technique for controlling multiple elevators that is optimized to provide the shortest possible wait time while speeding the time it takes to arrive at a destination floor. Rather than pressing a button to go up or down, passengers use a keypad or touchscreen in the lobby to first enter their desired floor. They are then directed to the next available elevator, which is pre-programmed to take them where they want to go in the fewest number of stops and in most cases, without interim stops at all.

"In a busy building where everyone is coming and going at once, you can waste a lot of valuable time riding or waiting for an elevator," said Ray Eleid, Director of Strategic Development at Solucore. "Smart elevators are already widely used throughout the U.S. as a way to vastly improve passenger convenience while reducing energy consumption, and we’re expecting interest to explode here in Canada once people begin to see the benefits."

Destination dispatch is considered a smart technology because it uses advanced algorithms to determine which elevator to call on based on the information supplied by passengers. Because it knows the desired destinations in advance, the technology has the ability to group people according to the floor numbers they choose, ultimately preventing multiple elevators from travelling to the same floor and minimizing the number of stops required for each route.

The specifications for the first smart elevator system deployed in Ontario, was designed by Solucore elevator modernization consultant engineers. In addition to improving the elevator ride for passengers due to its fast response and speedy operation, it also introduces several business benefits to building managers and owners in terms of energy cost savings, efficiencies and potential security enhancements.

For example, these smart elevators can be programmed to be energy conscious or extremely efficient when optimized to make fewer stops. Stopping at fewer floors also means the elevators can return faster to pick up more people more often, ultimately increasing productivity. And, by implementing a card swipe option, business owners can also more precisely control who has access to which floors of a building.

Solucore elevator installation consultants are working hand in hand with construction contractors to ensure that Ontario’s first wave of smart elevators are reliable and safe to use, leveraging years of engineering experience to conduct thorough maintenance inspections, technical audits and reviews. Calling the new technology "a significant improvement over what had been the status quo," Eleid explains that as the technology continues to roll out, the company is expecting to upgrade more than 14 major office complexes to destination dispatch by the end of 2012.

"We’re undertaking one of the largest elevator modernization efforts Ontario has ever seen," said Eleid. “Not only are we removing the frustration associated with navigating large, busy buildings, but we’re also introducing a smarter solution that ultimately saves time, money and energy."
