New Code Requirements Starting August 1st in Ontario!
If you have been following Solucore’s posts in an effort to keep your elevators up to date, you’ll know that a new code is on the horizon, and will take effect on August 1, 2022 in Ontario.
This new code will require you to have a two-way telephone system with video capabilities in your elevator. The phone system will have the ability to communicate with the use of a door open/door close button(s,) or with a unique button that accompanies these phones.
The difference between the current 2010 code and 2019 is as follows:
The phone system would look like this (see image below) from Schindler Elevator. This is their solution to the code and their means to comply with the requirements. Rath/Janus has an easy-to-understand video that you can watch here: https://youtu.be/slJvSm9hCvkFigure 1 https://us.schindler.com/content/dam/website/us/docs/elevators/schindler-elevator-emergency-comm-visual-device-brochure.pdf/_jcr_content/renditions/original./schindler-elevator-emergency-comm-visual-device-brochure.pdf
Why is this important?
Each monitoring center has software that enables them to take information from the phone call, convert the data to a control system, and turn on the camera. This process permits you to communicate with passengers in the elevator.
If you happen to have an OEM Elevator (Schindler, TK, Fujitec, Otis, etc.) and you decide you want to switch companies, it’s not quite as simple as programming the phone line from company A to company B. In fact, there might be a charge for the transfer of the phone lines. There was a time when elevator companies used to require an OEM phone with no dialer, so if you switched companies, you needed to buy a new phone.
Hopefully this won’t be an issue we will run into with these new phones, however, we can all appreciate that one elevator company may not be able to host another elevator company’s phone system and you may have to buy a new phone system altogether.
